Dear Principals and School-Based Science Fair Directors,
As you welcome back students to school, and as students return to classrooms with stories, questions, and ideas associated with Hurricane Irma, we want to remind you that our Thomas A. Edison Regional Science and Inventors Fairs (TAERSIF) are OPEN for registration.
Hurricanes and other natural disasters spur scientific research. Just as scientists use their expertise to help society in whatever way they can during a disaster, our student scientists may be inspired to pursue Irma-related research that contributes to the betterment of our community now and in the future. Moreover, students that wish to pursue these interests may earn very meaningful prizes and scholarships for their efforts.
Fair organizers also recognize that lost instructional time may pose challenges to short- and long-term instructional goals. Therefore, we are collaborating with our community partners to enhance fair resources. These additional resources are intended to support school-based fair operations and lessen burdens presently placed on teachers. TAERSIF staff are available to help connect you with these resources; please contact us.
Remember, when disaster strikes, science surges. The more data collected, the more discoveries made and lessons learned, the more likely our community will be ready to face the next disaster.
We hope you will encourage your students to pursue these opportunities. This year, we will look forward to welcoming students to regional science and inventors fairs so our community can celebrate all that they will accomplish post-Hurricane Irma. Go Thomas!
