800 Southwest Florida students to compete Saturday, January 20, 2018 for over 30 scholarships

On Saturday, January 20, 2018, approximately 800 students will participate in the Thomas Alva Edison Kiwanis Science and Engineering Fair and the Thomas A. Edison Festival of Light Regional Inventors Fair.  Public, private and home-schooled students from Southwest Florida will be competing at the Florida Gulf Coast University Alico Arena for over thirty scholarships from local universities, colleges and other supporters. Approximately 20,000 students from Lee and Charlotte Counties will have competed earlier in local school fairs with the winners advancing to this regional competition. This is a sanctioned event of the Edison Festival of Light (EFOL).

The Kiwanis Science Fair will showcase the science projects of about 450 extraordinary students in grades 6 -12. Another 350 creative inventors in grades K-12 will compete in the Edison Festival of Light Inventors Fair. Winners of the Kiwanis Science Fair will advance to further competition at the state and international level.  Judging begins at 9 AM.  The Inventors Fair will be open to the public between 1:30 PM and 4 PM and the Science Fair from approximately 3 PM to 5 PM, depending on completion of the judging.

In May of 2018 the TAERSIF will produce and conduct the Suncoast Credit Union Elementary Science Expo on the campus of Florida Southwestern State College.

The Thomas A. Edison Regional Science and Inventor Fair (TAERSIF) Steering Committee works year-round to organize and conduct the Thomas Alva Edison Kiwanis Science and Engineering Fair, the Suncoast Credit Union Elementary Science Expo and the Thomas A. Edison Festival of Light Regional Inventors Fair that host in total more than 1500 local students. Other key partners of TAERSIF include Lee County and Charlotte County Public Schools, numerous private and parochial schools, Florida Gulf Coast University, Hodges University, Florida Southwestern State College, the James and Eleanor Newton Scholarships, Sony Electronics, Imagine Solutions Conference, Caloosa Bromeliad Society, The Edison & Ford Winter Estates, The IMAG History and Science Center, Southwest Florida Community Foundation, Caloosa Veterinary Medical Society, Florida Power and Light, Doug MacGregor. The Edison Pageant of Light, the Entrepreneurs Society of Naples, the Scientist Society of Southwest Florida, Lee Memorial Health Systems, the Lee County Medical Society and numerous private donors and volunteers.
