Broadcom MASTERS Finalists from Florida

Southwest Florida middle school student participates in national Science and Engineering event!

Maya Chandar, a Canterbury School student who won First Place at the January, 2016 Thomas Alva Edison Kiwanis Science and Engineering Fair, recently participated as a Finalist in the sixth annual Broadcom MASTERS®— the nation’s most prestigious Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) middle school competition.

Ms. Chandar was selected to compete along with 30 other middle school students (out of a pool of 6,000 nominated students nationwide) at the national competition October 27- November 1. She was awarded an all-expense trip to Washington DC and $500 in cash as a result of her selection. She also competed for an additional $100,000 in awards at the Broadcast MASTERS competition. The annual competition tests abilities in STEM, critical thinking, communication, creativity and collaboration.

Maya’s project “The Effect of Ultrasound Waves vs Laser Beams on the Regrowth of Lumbriculus variegatus (A Novel Study)” previously won “Best of Fair” at the Kiwanis Science Fair as part of the Thomas A. Edison Regional Science and Inventors Fair and First Place in the junior high school division at the March, 2016 Florida State Science and Engineering Fair in Lakeland.
