Subject Area: Animals

Any project that involves non-human vertebrate animals including pets, lab animals, wild animals, and/or fish. Student researcher MUST protect the welfare of any vertebrate animal and give them every humane consideration.

What to Do…

Understand ethics of working with animals.

Explore alternatives to using vertebrate animals, like insects, worms, or other low order animals.

Have your teacher review your Research Plan BEFORE you begin any experimentation.

Have another adult who knows about animals review your project BEFORE you begin.

Key Concerns

Get APPROVAL from your teacher BEFORE you begin experimentation.

Conduct library research on proper animal care.

Plan your research project carefully.

Get a qualified adult to supervise your project.

Don’t do anything that might hurt/stress the animal.

Keep accurate records of what you did/observe.
